Most caregivers are dealing with way too much stress. What really matters is how you manage your stress. The easiest way to do so is through stress relief techniques. The trick can be finding the right techniques for you.
Explore Your Options Before You Dive In
You can find hundreds of different ways to relieve stress. There are complicated techniques, easy techniques, and techniques that require absolutely no skill whatsoever. You don’t have to try them all. What you should do, ideally, is to at least explore what your options are and see what jumps out at you. Just because other people are trying a specific technique, that doesn’t mean you have to as well.
Start with the Easy Stuff
Now that you’ve got a list of what you want to try, look carefully at the whole list. What jumps out at you as something you want to try and that you know will be easy for you to do? One example of this might be something like breathing exercises. Everybody knows how to breathe, you don’t need any special equipment, and all you’re doing is gradually breathing more and more deeply. That’s a way for you to start out with something really easy that helps you to get your feet wet with this.
If Something Doesn’t Work for You, Skip It
Avoid perfection when it comes to stress relief. First, there’s no such thing as perfection, but also you don’t have to do everything or do anything perfectly. If you try something off your list and it either doesn’t work for you or you hate it, then don’t keep trying it. If you try out deep breathing and you find that you get worried you’re going to hyperventilate, that might not be the stress relief technique for you. Try another instead of beating yourself up over that one.
Find Someone You Can Talk To
Something that can help is to find someone to talk to who understands what you’re going through. As a caregiver, that might mean finding a caregiver support group in your area. Or it could mean talking to a friend or to a therapist that you feel understands your situation. Whoever it is, this person should be someone you feel comfortable talking to and who allows you to vent when you need to do so.
Stress relief should be easy but it shouldn’t be something that makes you feel bad or makes you feel as if you can’t get what you need. Take your time and go easy on yourself.
